Attorneys John Laudati & Donna L. Buttler at MURPHY, LAUDATI, KIEL, BUTTLER & RATTIGAN, LLC provide cost-effective legal advocacy for individuals involved in family law matters, including litigation, settlement negotiations and representation in the collaborative process. With 50 years of combined experience, their focus is on guiding their clients through the often-complicated emotional and financial issues that must be resolved to complete a divorce. It is their goal to provide each client with an individualized financial plan and if necessary, parenting plan that allows them to rebuild their lives and family.

All divorces involve the same 4 issues. It is the process of resolving these issues that differs.

1. Parenting: development of a parenting schedule for post-divorce parenting and a clear understanding of the responsibilities each of you have to your children.

2. Asset and Debt Division: development of a plan to fairly divide the assets and liabilities of the marriage whether in the form of real property, personal property, deferred retirement benefits etc. (Also wise to look at the tax advantages of different options.

3. Cash Flow (support): development of a budget for how the finances of the family are going to work given the need and expense of two households; and

4. Everything Else: health insurance, life insurance, college, taxes etc.

The difference lies in HOW you reach agreement on these issues.

For the past 25 years ATTORNEY BONNIE ROBSON has helped people to resolve these divorce related issues using the non-adversarial processes of Divorce Mediation and Collaborative Divorce.  She brings to the practice her experience and advanced degrees in child development as well as law.

In mediation, Attorney Robson serves as the neutral facilitator for the parties. The process involves being willing to sit in a room with your spouse respectfully; to be willing to speak truthfully (and listen without interrupting); and to honestly disclose all of the required financial documentation needed to develop options for your post-divorce lives. The four categories of issues are the same.

In Collaborative Divorce each spouse has an attorney with specialized training in “the collaborative process”.  The attorneys and clients meet together over several meetings (sometimes with other neutral professionals) to resolve, out of court, the same four categories of issues.

The commitment in both Mediation and Collaborative Divorce is to resolve these issues outside of court.  It requires a desire to feel that you can and should be the author  (or at least co-author) of your post-divorce lives.  These processes do not require people to feel undying trust and love towards their soon to be ex-spouses.  These processes are for people who recognize that for your children, the divorce doesn’t end with the court date. You’re mom and dad to them forever. These processes only require a commitment to working together on the issues of coming apart.
